After School Care Program
“Our focus on the After Care Programme is to provide the highest quality education. Places are limited to ensure each child receives the care they need to fulfill their dreams. There are many children who would benefit from Anak Bangsa’s support and we are working to meet their needs in the future”
(Deni, manager)
Aims
Education, socialisation and re-intergration are the main aims of the After School Care Program. This holistic approach intergrates both practical and lifestyle skills. The children take English lessons and computer classes as an aid to participating in the modern world. Citizenship is also a key part of the program and children explore their part in society and social responsibilities.
In Lombok, there are many children who do not have the opportunity to attend school or drop out early due to lack of money. Anak Bangsa’s re- intergration program provides financial support to assist children back to school.
Program
The program runs Monday to Saturday, from 13:30 to 17:30hr. After their regular school the children are picked up from home and taken to Anak Bangsa.
The Children follow a curriculum of English (conversation) lessons, computer classes, lifestyle skills and religion.
“Giving courses in religion is quite important in a society as Indonesia where religion plays a major role in daily life. Also, there is a strong suspicion, that organisations like us might convert the children. Therefore we offer every child courses about it’s own religion.” (Jill, Founder/ Project coordinator)
To develop the children’s creativity handicraft, music classes, sports and games form part of the learning experience.
Social workers are actively involved with the work of Anak Bangsa. They play a crucial role in developing relationships with parents and families in the ‘kampungs’.
“Our tailored support can only be successful with the trust and cooperation of the parents and families. We want to be an open and safe organisation for them and their children.” (Pujas, Social worker)
Finances
In June 2008 Anak Bangsa started running two classes supporting a total of 26 children. To continue the present program the organisation has a budget of 700€ per month. With the plans to expand, Anak Bangsa will need more financial resources.
